Chapter 15 - Alpha

Her first thought was BLIMP HANGAR.

The walls of this room were perhaps fifty feet away and were a lighter gray. The ceiling was an even lighter gray and maybe fifty feet high.

But what made her instantly think "blimp" was a long tube-like body that floated a foot or two above the floor. It was shaped somewhat like the body of a jumbo passenger jet, but it had a nose tapered more than the big jets she'd seen or seen photos of. It was maybe forty feet high and wide when it swelled to its fattest.

It was as long as a jumbo jet, she saw as she walked along it toward the far wall of the—hangar. The silvery dart shape was maybe three hundred feet long, the length of a football field.

Nearing the middle of the—vehicle?—Mildred saw that two long nacelles rose out of the last third of the body. She guessed they were like jet engines but could see no air intakes. She suspected that when she rounded the end of the vehicle she'd see no exhaust exits in the nacelles either.

Mildred guessed that the two pods on the near side of the vehicle were balanced by two more on the opposite side to make a total of four.

Her ruminations were interrupted as she walked. The glossy silver side of the ship was broken as a large rectangular section rose out of the ship, split vertically in two, and slid aside. As it did so a stair slid down out of the body of the ship till the lower end nearly touched the floor. Banisters on each side of the stairs rose into place, ready to steady users as they walked up or down the stairs.

Come into my parlor...

Arghh! She banished the thought and stepped onto the first stair step. The stair did not show any evidence that she'd done so, nor the body of the vehicle. It was as if she weighed nothing.

Mildred walked up the stairs and into the vehicle. The split door was tall and she did not have to stoop as she passed the doorway.

Inside was a hallway leading off to the left and right. It was carpeted in dark green. Its walls and ceiling were colored cream.

The hallway to the left was brighter lit than the part of it to the right. Mildred turned into it. As she did so the stairs disappeared. Not retracted into the ship. Simply disappeared. So did the door. The wall where it had been was as unbroken as if the doorway had never been.

More evidence that she was dealing with technology more advanced than humans had yet attained.

She walked maybe forty feet till she approached a blank wall. When she was a step or two away it vanished. The carpet beyond was light blue. When she passed wholly onto the blue carpet the wall was suddenly back in place.
